Unlike a Petrol Spark Ignition; a diesel engine uses compression ignition. A mixture of fuel and air are compressed in the combustion chamber. As they compress, the gases increase in temperature until they ignite. To assist cold engine start – Diesel engines are fitted with glow-plugs to help raise the temperature for ignition.
